Now
houses the Kilkenny Tourist Office.
One
of the few surviving Tudor Alms Houses in Ireland it was built in 1582
by Sir Richard Shee to accommodate 12 poor people (6 men and 6 women)
of the city of Kilkenny. He provided for its continuity in his will and
it remained a charitable institution for more than 300 years until 1912
when it was let as a store.
During
the time of the Penal Laws in the eighteenth century the building was
used, illegally, as a catholic chapel by priests on the run who said mass
there for local Catholics. That this was done with the connivance of local
Protestants says much for the good relations that existed between the
two denominations in Kilkenny at that time and which continues to this
day.
