Café
Sol is a simple, square room, perfectly delightful at lunchtime when it
is thronged with locals who adore this flavourful, good value cooking. The
menu is eclectic but well chosen, a moreish mix of sandwiches, vegetarian
dishes such as mediterranean salad with goats cheese, nachos with chilli
sauce, salad and cheese, salads such as chicken livers with green lentils,
and splendid main dishes such as the lovely Lavistown sausages served with
cracking mash and a fine mustard mayonaisse and of course delicious desserts,
all homemade.
This is the
food the girls like: fun to make and easy on the tastebuds and the pocket.
In the evening
the blinds are drawn and the candles lit and the menu opens out; breast
of duck with apple, honey and rosemary, chicken with mozzerella and parma
ham, pasta with tomato, chilli and basil, good scallops and fantastic
steaks with red wine sauce.
Nothing gets
in the way of the flavours of the food and this unpretentious cooking
is designed to please, to satisfy and it achieves this effortlessly.
It's fun
food, and the Kilkenny bourgeoisie, and the Kilkenny tourists and the
Kilkenny festival set, all love it to bits.
